Chef Ysidro’s Barbeque Places 19th in Nation
St. Luke’s own award-winning barbeque cook (who also happens to be our church custodian) Ysidro Longoria earned another notch of national success at the National Championship Barbeque Cookoff in Meridian, Texas, Oct. 22.
Ysidro’s chicken placed 19th out of a field of 206 specially selected cookers from across the U.S.
This counts the fourth time that Ysidro has been invited to the annual event, and, while 19th place is exciting, it not his best showing ever. In last year’s contest, his delicious ribs took 13 place, and he’s been in the Top 20 in other categories numerous times as well.
“This contest pays real money to people who make the Top 10, and I’ve never gotten that high before. But that’s my goal. Until then, it’s just a great time. We have a lot of fun with it every year,” Ysidro said.
To help cover his expenses for the trip to Meridian, Ysidro organized his own benefit on Oct. 15, and many St. Luke’s members bought tickets for some of his legendary brisket that day.
The public’s next chance to taste some of Ysidro’s nationally recognized deliciousness will be Nov. 5 at the St. Luke’s Flea Market. He will be cooking from his new pit, and sales of his plates will benefit the St. Luke’s youth group projects. He is also scheduled to cook in the Taft Christmas Festival on Dec. 10 in Taft.
