God became one of us! Christmas is the celebration of this essential confession of the Christian faith. The very Son of God, one with the Father, chose to come into this world
The Blessings of Lowering My Standards
“Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” ~ Psalm 46:10 (NRSV)
For a person who literally danced her way through high school, I’m remarkably uncoordinated. I can easily make either my feet or my hands do what they’re supposed to, but getting both to cooperate at the same time has always taken practice. So, with one foot out of commission due to recent surgery, but having an otherwise healthy body, crutches might seem like the obvious choice. However, if you add the consumption of pain pills to my already challenged hand-foot-eye coordination, you would quickly see that a wheelchair is a safer choice. Determined not to do anything that would slow down my foot’s healing, for the past two weeks I’ve used a wheelchair to get around the house. An unexpected side-effect is that I have found blessing in “lowering my standards.” Let me explain. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s What Comes Out
Several people have spoken with me about the timeliness of the sermon I preached on August 14. Some have said that it hit home with something in their personal life. Others have talked about how it ties in with what they’re hearing in the news as we near a presidential election season. So, here’s an abbreviated form of that message for those who missed it or who would just like to further reflect on it:
Jesus said, “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander.” ~ Matthew 15:18-19 (NRSV)
There have been times that I would have liked to hit a rewind button on something I said! I suspect that is true for just about everyone. At some point in life, we’ve wished words could be retracted and different words (or NO words!) could have been spoken. Read the rest of this entry »
