Co-ed Softball Team’s Inaugural Season Delayed
St. Luke’s co-ed softball team, formed informally in June just before the promised start-date of a City of Corpus Christi recreational softball league, will delay the start of its first season until at least the summer of 2012.
The city has scheduled the league to start on October 24, but the fall schedule just doesn’t work for most of the St. Luke’s team’s members.
“We’ll try again in the summer, when our people just have more time to play, ” said coach Ysidro Longoria.
In anticipation of joining the city’s summer league (which never came to fruition because of construction delays at the city’s Greenwood Softball Complex), the team raised nearly $1200 for its expenses by selling barbeque plates cooked by Longoria. That money will likely be transferred to another of the church’s programs, and the team will conduct another fund raiser when it begins organizing for a summer league.
The softball team is part of a new tradition of recreational sports teams sponsored by St. Luke’s. The church is now planning to field entries in a women’s volley ball league that usually starts each February at First Baptist Church. The men’s basketball team is planning to begin its second season in a league that usually starts in March or April of each year at First Baptist, too.
Co-Rec Softball Team Starts Practice June 28
Even before the league details are available, the St. Luke’s co-rec softball team is gearing up for its summer season. Practices will begin at 6:30 p.m. June 28 and continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening until games begin. Initially, practices will be held on fields between Baker Middle School and Casa Linda Elementary near the church, but the location may change as other fields become available.
