Day of Pentecost, Year A

The Day of Pentecost, the 50th day of Easter. Yes, we are still celebrating Easter, but we have moved well beyond the empty tomb! Now we are in the streets and a mighty wind is blowing, propelling the church into relationship with the peoples of all nations, generations, and situations. On this day we celebrate and claim the promise of the risen and ascended Lord, who sends the  Holy Spirit upon and into and through the believing community.
The readings for this day invite us to a cosmic view of time and space and our place in God's world/universe. While we often think of the Day of Pentecost as "the birthday of the church" or we focus on the dynamic force of the Spirit impelling the church to bear witness and do evangelism, there is a sense in which the readings ask us to open our minds and ask:
What is God up to in the universe?

I will pour out upon my children a portion of my Spirit,

a flame upon their lives, and the old will dream,

and young men will have visions, your sons and

your daughters in my Spirit will prophesy.

Joel 2:18

We have not received the spirit of the world

but the Spirit who is from God, that we may

understand what God has freely given us.

1 Corinthians 2:12
